A lot of people put their faith in charity organizations like the American Cancer Society (ACS), dutifully donating money to help in the “war on cancer.” But in the report titled American Cancer Society—More Interested In Accumulating Wealth Than Saving Lives, Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, plainly lays to bare the many conflicts of interest that hamper the effectiveness of this organization.

For example, the ACS has close financial ties to both makers of mammography equipment and cancer drugs. But that’s just for starters. Other conflicts of interest include ties to, and financial support from, the pesticide-, petrochemical-, biotech-, cosmetics-, and junk food industries—the very industries whose products are the primary contributors to cancer!

The ACS, along with the National Cancer Institute, virtually exclusively focus on cancer research and the diagnosis and chemical treatment of cancer. Preventive strategies, such as avoiding chemical exposures, receive virtually no consideration at all.

“Giant corporations, which profited handsomely while they polluted air, water, the workplace, and food with a wide range of carcinogens, remain greatly comforted by the silence of the ACS. This silence reflected a complex of mindsets fixated on diagnosis, treatment, and basic genetic research, together with ignorance, indifference, and even hostility to prevention. Not surprisingly, the incidence of cancer over past decades has escalated, approximately parallel to its increased funding,” Dr. Epstein writes.

Many also do not realize that when you donate money to the American Cancer Society, the majority of it may never go further than the bank accounts of its numerous well-paid executives.

Meanwhile, global cancer rates have doubled in the last three decades, and their “war on cancer” strategy completely ignores, and oftentimes denies, the obvious links between cancer and toxic exposures through pesticide-laden foods, toxic personal care products, cancer-causing medical treatments and drugs, and industrial pollution. We CAN turn this trend around, but to do so the medical and research communities must stop focusing on drug treatments and overlooking the methods that can actually have a significant impact on preventing this disease.

My Top 12 Tips for Cancer Prevention

Rather than put your health in the hands of cancer researchers willing to do just about anything to discover the next cancer drug breakthrough, take control of your health by following the cancer-preventive lifestyle changes below.

Avoid Fructose and Sugar

It’s quite clear that if you want to avoid cancer, or are currently undergoing cancer treatment, you absolutely MUST avoid all forms of sugar — especially fructose — and this is largely due to its relation to insulin resistance. According to Lewis Cantley, director of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, as much as 80 percent of all cancers are “driven by either mutations or environmental factors that work to enhance or mimic the effect of insulin on the incipient tumor cells,” Gary Taubes reports.

Some cancer centers, such as the Cancer Centers of America, have fully embraced this knowledge and place their patients on strict low-sugar, low-grain diets. But conventional medicine in general has been woefully lax when it comes to highlighting the health dangers of this additive.

As a standard recommendation, I strongly advise keeping your TOTAL fructose consumption below 25 grams per day including fruits. But for most people it would also be wise to limit your fructose from fruit to 15 grams or less, as you’re virtually guaranteed to consume “hidden” sources of fructose if you drink beverages other than water and eat processed food.

Optimize Your Vitamin D Level

There’s overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that vitamin D deficiency plays a crucial role in cancer development. Researchers within this field have estimated that about 30 percent of cancer deaths — which amounts to 2 million worldwide and 200,000 in the United States — could be prevented each year simply by optimizing the vitamin D levels in the general population.

On a personal level, you can decrease your risk of cancer by MORE THAN HALF simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with sun exposure. And if you are being treated for cancer it is likely that higher blood levels—probably around 80-90 ng/ml—would be beneficial.

If the notion that sun exposure actually prevents cancer is still new to you, I highly recommend you watch my one-hour vitamin D lecture to clear up any confusion. It’s important to understand that the risk of skin cancer from the sun comes onlyfrom excessive exposure.

Exercise

If you are like most people, when you think of reducing your risk of cancer, exercise doesn’t immediately come to mind. However, there is some fairly compelling evidence that exercise can slash your risk of cancer. One of the primary ways exercise lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells.

For example, physically active adults experience about half the incidence of colon cancer as their sedentary counterparts, and women who exercise regularly may reduce their breast cancer risk by 20 to 30 percent compared to those who are inactive. It’s important to include a large variety of techniques in your exercise routine, such as strength training, aerobics, core-building activities, and stretching. Most important of all, however, is to make sure you include high-intensity, burst-type exercise, such as those described in my Peak Fitness program.

These exercises activate your super-fast twitch muscle fibers, which can increase your body’s natural production of human growth hormone. For detailed instructions, please see this previous article.

Get appropriate amounts of high quality animal-based omega-3 fats.

Eat according to your nutritional type. The potent anti-cancer effects of this principle are very much underappreciated. When we treat cancer patients in our clinic this is one of the most powerful anti-cancer strategies we have.

Engage in activities that help you reduce your stress levels, such as exercise, meditation, journaling, music, gardening, etc. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed.

Only 25 percent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic. Cruciferous vegetables in particular have been identified as having potent anti-cancer properties. Remember that carb nutritional types may need up to 300 percent more vegetables than protein nutritional types.

Maintain an ideal body weight.

Get appropriate amounts of high-quality sleep.

Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.

Reduce your use of cell phones and other wireless technologies, and implement as many safety strategies as possibleif/when you cannot avoid their use.

Boil, poach or steam your foods, rather than frying or charbroiling them. Better yet eat as many of your foods raw as you can.

Any personal interaction? It may be just me…my perception or the situations I’ve been around lately, but…seems to me people, especially families will do anything not to communicate face to face.

I have been paying much closer attention every time I go out now. The last few meals out, I have kept a close eye on the interaction of the people at the tables around me. I swear on a plate of spaghetti and meatballs that the dinner goers are much more fascinated and enthralled with whatever gadget they have available than talking to the incredible people who are with them.

It’s the cell phone… If not the cell phone it’s the smart phone or the kindle or the DS or any combination of them all.

There was a family of 4 at a local pizza joint the other day and they sat with their heads buried in data from the minute they crossed the threshold of the restaurant to the second they walked out and beyond. They did take a breather to slurp down some sloppy pizza pie…If there was an APP that would feed them…I’m sure they would use it.

Am I missing something…what is so darn important to be constantly in close communication with whoever is on the other line? Oh yeah…they must be solving the fiscal crisis or formulating an attack plan to finally secure world peace…

Now I’m sure there are some important conversations going on out there but look at it this way…what if we took the time to really be present with our spouses and children and friends and associates. Really took some time to focus on them. Actually got to know people. To me that would be a grass roots place to start to move change in this world. Everything starts with the quality of relationships. It would be a much healthier alternative both socially and physically as well.

Dr Mercola on his website has some eye opening articles on the dangers of cell phone and techie devices. Now I’m no polly anna…of course I see the need for these things in the way society operates today…but I really believe one of the keys to a happier more holistic way of living is to take those precious moments we have together to really connect.

So, Sandy has been away a few days at a seminar and it got me to thinkin’…I saw a video on Dr.Mercola’s website. It talked about how couples who kiss more stay together longer..or at least have a better shot with the divorce rate close to 50%. It’s worth a look.

I think and believe all married couples should kiss passionately at least once a day. Wouldn’t you agree that the world would be a much calmer place if more people were kissing on a regular basis? I certainly do.

Maybe it doesn’t have to be all out passionate kisses out of the gate, but kisses that last more than a peck! Gradually build up to a crescendo of passionate kisses!

We had interviewed Mort Fertel last year, a marriage and relationship expert on www.HolisticParentsHub.com.

A big part of Mort’s alternative to counseling program is touch charging! The touch charges can do just that…put a charge back in your relationship pretty quickly and easily…if you and your partner are open to it.

It’s a simple loving touch on your partner 3 times a day…each. So for a total of 6 times…you get to touch. Pretty cool huh? I like it. The exercise is designed to bring you back to when you were courting and touching was welcome and fun…remember that. Little tickles, soft strokes, the brush of the back of the hand…ha ha make sure it’s a soft back of the hand.

Like all couples we go through cycles together. I know when Sandy and I are using the touch charges…we are more in tune with each other. Its not always welcome though, with three beautiful blond haired monkeys using us as jungle gyms half the time, more touch might not be the thing we are looking for. So be aware of how your partners feeling.

Anyway you slice it,… affectionate touch, especially kissing,… can be a great thing to help create a stronger bond with your partner:) It also helps with peaceful parenting…being positive all around!

Our little baby boy Colin begins his first year. Kindergarten is such an exciting time. Little Collie loves to play with his mini action figures…he plays with such an incredibly innocent imagination…We always ask…”watcha doin Colin..? “He answers back …playing guys!

He asked this morning as we were herding everyone through the regimen of getting out to school…Dad can I bring some guys to school? No buddy…not today. I answered….he then had his back up question ready…then what about some Leggos? Ha ha…I credit him for his persistence…no toys I had to answer…Your teacher will have lots of fun things for you to do though I promised!…Low and behold…his teachers..Ms.Pederson and Mrs. McRae had piles of Leggos on every table when we got to his class! GO TEACHERS! It was perfect for him! He is going to love it and excel in school.

Hannah and Ryan are also excited for the new year…Hannah Banana is in 4th and Ry Scooty is in 2nd…we have 3 of them in the same school… with Gymnastics and Soccer, chorus and dance going on it should be loads of fun! It’s pretty peculiar though…Ryan was up every morning this summer at the crack of dawn…but for some reason on the first day of the new school year he just couldn’t drag himself outta bed…hmmm. Now I know there is craziness happening in your homes too, please feel free to comment on your kids first day of school and share stories with our Holistic Parenting Community. Chat soon…

Doesn’t that drive you crazy…the to-do list that is not only 8 pages long, but always feels like you haven’t made any ground on it?

We’ll today I’ve had an epiphany! I always start my days going at 100 miles per hour, and don’t stop until the kids are in bed. Then I grab for a glass of wine to simmer me down, and then onto the next day! So exhausting,… even thinking about it is tiring.

Today’s new thought came as I was just about to start plowing away at that list one more time. I usually just shot-gun around it, doing whatever is on my mind that I remember at the time. No real rime or reason,… just doing.

I realized that each day I am working non-stop to finish tasks, but the list is never ending. At the end of each day, I never feel satisfied, no matter how much I do. I just begin tasks,… one after the other like I’m on a treadmill, (yet most of the time, I tend to “forget” that task)! Ahhh… the feeling of never being fulfilled is exhausting,… stressful,… and just plain no fun.

Today the “second” voice in my head said,… “why not just review you list in the morning, pick 3-5 of the most important tasks that need to be done, number them in an order so I don’t need to wonder what comes next,… and then when that list is done, so am I for the day?” Na,… that would make too much sense?

What,… is it possible that I can actually be DONE for the day?? That sounds foreign, but maybe I’ll actually feel accomplished and organized too? Hmmm… Let’s see. Okay, here we go… Today I did just that, and here’s how it worked out:

1. Reviewed my “many” page “to do” list and selected what was most important and needed to be done first (before other tasks could be done).

2. Numbered them 1-5 in the order I intended on doing them.

3. Felt organized and relieved that the day’s work could actually be finished.

4. Chopped off #4-5 and decided I always tend to overbook myself (after all- it is Sunday)…

5. Started on #1, then did #2, then 3. Ohhh… now what? I’m not used to actually being done?!?

I felt excited,… but confused at the same time. I am a self confessed multi-task queen. I really don’t know how to relax! What’s that? You know that trait,… combined with a strong “D” type personality is a tough match. I have to say, we are usually the best people to have over to eat. We can’t sit still after the meal so we’ll clean up, wash every dish, wrap the leftovers,… and practically mop your floor when were done eating.

We need to TRY to relax,… it certainly does not come easily. Forget “trying” to meditate on our own. We need headphones and a meditation CD to make us “feel” like we are accomplishing something while at the same time we are “relaxing.”

All done, now what?? We’ll for tonight, I spent about 2 hours cooking a home made eggplant parm with my daughter. Of course that was my “relaxing,” but it kept her busy too. Then I cooked chocolate chip cookies while we ate. (gulity again of multi-tasking).

Boy this relaxing is harder work than it seems! Until the next day… wish me luck!

I read a very interesting article on Dr Mercola’s website… The article fits right in with our views on holistic parenting. The doc talks about the crazy cumulative effect of using ant-bacterial and anti microbial soaps and hand sanitizers everywhere and all the time! The fear of germs and infection has gotten so out of control in our society in my humble opinion.

Funny Guy Howie Mandel won’t even shake your hand for fear of contracting some horrible disease that was passed on from your cousins cousins cousins dog named Cleetus.

Don’t get me wrong those of you that are potty training boys or potty training girls…part of the process is…”make sure you wash your hands after you pee”. Experts say that washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water is actually more effective than using the anti microbials. The following statement comes right from the Dr.Mercola article” In fact, in one Pakistani study, people who washed their hands with plain soap and water were able to reduce the incidence of childhood diarrhea by 53 percent. Those who used antibiotic soap containing 1.2 percent triclocarban actually experienced slightlyhigher incidence of illness.”

That means you don’t have to cover yourself with generous squirts of these assumed “lifesaving” products.

We are all pray to the endless marketing of yet another fear industry…you can pick up these little hand sanitizers at any check out line or counter.

They even come equipped now with key chain rings attached to them.

The main ingredient in these products is triclosan. It has several other names but this is the most widely known.

The “wonderful” thing about this substance is that it is used not only in cleaners but on mattresses, in shoes,on athletic wear and on cutting boards.

The chemical actually will lodge itself in fat cells(I have too many of those) and camp out there for a very long time…it also accumulates.

So every squirt stays with you, its the gift that keeps giving

A study was done on breast milk in Sweden and high levels of triclosan were found in 3 out of 5 samples tested.

I guess these studies have also identified the chemical as also increasing hormones inn some way that accelerates puberty in female rats…yikes.

Think it may have a little to do with our early teenage daughters looking like 28 year olds? Possibly…Not too much good associated with it

Maybe its time for the holistic community to “Just Say No” (thanks Nancy) to Howies favorite potion and get back to good ole hand washing… and the joys of potty training toddlers.

I know that yelling was a staple in many homes including mine , growing up.
Does it ever help? Not really...it gets attention for a second but then gets tuned out...that was my protocol growing up...after awhile it just sounds like another noise...LOUD.
So why was I doing it?

What a day yesterday…My beautiful wife is outta town overnight and I have the three kiddies all to myself…!This is nothing new but for some reason…I felt brain farty and couldn’t control a darn thing…

Maybe that was the problem, trying to control..

I had this glorious idea that I would get all these things accomplished and nothing would interfere…ha ha ha ha ha! Now that’s funny : ) My belly hurts more from laughing at that one than from eating a Big Mac.

Anyway…all the kids wanted to do was have a bit of fun, yearning for time with their Daddy and I just wanted to get things done…practice my presentation, learn songs for my new band…clean the house.

Bottom line was not much got done except frustration and inevitably…YELLING!!!

I know that yelling was a staple in many homes including mine , growing up.

Does it ever help? Not really…it gets attention for a second but then gets tuned out…that was my protocol growing up…after awhile it just sounds like another noise…LOUD.

So why was I doing it?

I’ll tell you why…because I wasn’t taking the time with the kids…including them in my day…and venting out of frustration after boiling for hours. They all were bouncing off the walls and it was too darn hot to play outside.

My expectations were set without taking all into consideration. I did better later in the day when Hannah Ryan and Colin and I all sat down too watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid part 2! Very funny btw. Nothing else to focus on…just each other, a movie, popcorn and LAUGHTER! Laughter sure beats yelling …agree?

Now there are times that discipline needs to come into play but how bout in a structured firm yet peaceful way. Setting expectations for kids and making them aware of consequences…will go a long way to keeping peace in the home. We try to kneel down and get on their level as well so I don’t come across as domineering. When we do it that way…our trio seems to respond a bit better Our friend Carla Hugo has a program called Peaceful Parenting check out an interview we did with her for some tips .http://tinyurl.com/Peaceful-1

Til next time…Lets all take a deep breath… count to three…and work on actually communicating with our kids in place of YELLING!!!

Autism and Vaccines Researcher for CDC, Indicted for Fraud and Money-Laundering

SafeMinds demands long-overdue independent review of vaccine/autism research for data manipulation and conflicts of interest. Vaccine safety remains questionable.

Atlanta- Poul Thorsen, the principal coordinator of multiple studies funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) used to deny a vaccine/autism link was indicted on April 13th on 13 counts of fraud and 9 counts of money laundering. The charges relate to funding for work he conducted for the CDC, which claimed to disprove associations between the mercury-based vaccine preservative, thimerosal, and increased rates of autism.

SafeMinds first voiced concerns in 2003 regarding a series of epidemiology studies out of Denmark and under the jurisdiction of Thorsen that provided the basis for the Institute of Medicine’s claim that there was no association between thimerosal and autism. That claim has been responsible for the continued unsafe use of mercury in influenza vaccines in the United States and infant vaccines around the world.

“The quality of this epidemiological research has always been questionable,” states Sallie Bernard, SafeMinds president. “Many biological studies support a link between mercury and autism, but these Danish studies have been used to suppress further research into thimerosal. With clear evidence of Dr. Thorsen’s lack of ethics, it is imperative to reopen this investigation.”

From August to October of 2003, three articles on the autism-mercury controversy were published in close succession, all of which used data from a Danish registry for psychiatric research to assess the relationship between autism trends and the use of thimerosal. SafeMinds accessed the registry at the time and reported that a large percentage of diagnosed autism cases are lost from the Danish registry each year and that most of those lost cases were older children. Since the studies were based on finding fewer older thimerosal-exposed children than younger unexposed children, the validity of their conclusion exonerating thimerosal in autism was questionable and likely a result of missing records rather than true lower incidence rates among the exposed group.

In addition, internal emails obtained via FOIA document discussion between the Danish researchers and Thornsen which acknowledge that the studies did not include the latest data from 2001 where the incidence and prevalence of autism was declining which would be supportive of a vaccine connection. The emails also include requests from Thornsen to CDC asking that the agency write letters to the journal Pediatrics encouraging them to publish the research after it had been rejected by other journals.

A top CDC official complied with the request sending a letter to the editor of the journal supporting the publication of the study which they called a “strong piece of evidence that thimerosal is not linked to autism”.

As fraud charges regarding Thorsen surface, and as we believe the registry was unreliable, SafeMinds is calling for an independent federal investigation of these studies for data manipulation and scientific misconduct. Further background information on these studies, the charges against Dr. Thorsen, and documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act that support SafeMinds’ concerns are available on our website, www.safeminds.org.
