Keeping Your Family Safe From Outdoor Pesticides & Toxins

Keeping Your Family Safe From Outdoor Pesticides & Toxins
By: Sandy & Mike Quast

As we are all somewhat aware, we are living in a toxic society.  Yeah, sure your grandmother is still around and she’s 95, and she’s still ok, but we may not have the same luxury of living as long as she has.  Experts say that our children are the first generation EVER to be expected to have a shorter lifespan than we do.  Pretty scary, huh?  Well, we think so.

We’ve decided to do whatever we can to insure the health of our children to not only live a longer life than we do, but for them to have the quality of life we all wish we could, well into our 90’s and beyond.  Grandma was lucky enough to live a portion of her life BEFORE the days of mass over vaccination and the creation of today’s Big Pharma society.

How do we anticipate to do this?  We’ve taken an abundance of years of our personal research from experts in the fields of holistic health and organic nutrition and complied it into a simple to follow step by step way for us to do our best to rid ourselves and our environments of unnecessary toxins.

For the purpose of this article, we are going to discuss just one step of that checklist, and that is how to avoid as much as possible, outdoor pollutants and toxins to keep you and your kids safer.

First and foremost, you should look up your address on the website http://www.scorecard.org  to see how toxic your neighborhood is.  You may be living near a superfund site and not even know it!  We, we used to take our kids to a local farmer to go for a hayride and go pumpkin picking, and occasionally buy some produce from their farm.  Little did we know, that just across the street and UP the hill was a superfund site that was shut down, but nonetheless a toxic waste land!  Now we didn’t have to be a brain surgeon to determine where the rain water flows to after a storm!  You can bet we don’t shop there anymore!  Anyway, on that website you can also determine how bad your outdoor air pollution is.

Secondly, if you live on or nearby a golf course, you would be well served to speak to the management to see what sort of chemicals they “douse” the lawn with to keep it so green and plush.  Research the chemicals, and if toxic, see if you can offer them a healthy alternative that you can find at www.ehow.com and just search by “non-toxic fertilizers.

Now, if your using a toxic mix on your lawn, or you neighbor is next door, switch to a safer alternative and ask the neighbor to so as well.  We lived in a nice neighborhood in Florida and every few weeks our neighbor had a company come over to “spray” their lush lawn.  We’ll we had a newborn, and we could smell the chemicals wafting into our home through our air conditioning system which was on the same side of the house as they were.  We talked to them, and they agreed to at least give us notice when they were going to spray so we could shut off our A/C and go out for a while.  Not the best solution, but better than doing nothing.  Another thing, we has a pool, so we are sure the fumes where laying on top of the water after they sprayed, so we would wait a while to swim, and leave the filter on longer to detox the water.

Last, but not least, make sure you are not living in close proximity to any large power lines.  This is a debatable topic with many studies reporting a higher risk for childhood leukemia among young children living within 600 meters from power lines. The power lines form invisible auras known as electromagnetic fields. These are believed to be responsible for the higher cancer rates in surrounding homes.  We don’t know about you, but we don’t want to make our children the guinea pig for any such experiment.  Be on the safe side, avoid living near them.

As most of us are aware, toxins live not only outdoors, but indoors with indoor air pollution, household cleaners and in our personal care products like baby wash, toothpaste and deodorants.  You are in charge of your family alone.  You need to do your own due diligence to find the safest alternatives for your children and yourselves.  We recommend  reading The Safe Shoppers Bible by Dr. Samuel Epstein to help you make the safest personal care choices for your family.  Until next time…
